That morning, the Bell Recreation Center at 16820 N. 99th Ave. extends its Sunday hours to 5:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m., matching the rest of the week. It sounds like a scheduling footnote. For anyone who has tried to get a lap in on a 108-degree Sunday afternoon, it is the most useful change to the summer routine all year.
That is the actual shape of a Sun City summer in 2026. Not a heat story. A calendar story. Between the Recreation Centers of Sun City programming, a handful of dated club events, and one new fast-food opening on Grand Avenue, there is more happening in-community this month than most residents have on their fridge. Here is what is worth blocking off.
The Bell hours change is the anchor of the month
Bell is the biggest of the seven RCSC campuses, and residents describe it as a full-service compound rather than a gym. Inside the campus you have a sixteen-lane bowling alley, an indoor shuffleboard court, a large lap pool and walking pool, a weight room and a therapeutic spa, plus buildings for stained glass, silversmithing, lapidary, and woodworking. There is even a county library branch attached.
Sundays used to be the day when the campus effectively closed early. Now, with the extension, a 6 a.m. lap swim before the sun crests the parapet is on the table every day of the week. If you organize your summer around indoor cardio, that is thirty extra usable hours a month. The pattern to build is simple: pool or walking track before 8 a.m., crafts building or library mid-morning, back home before the asphalt gets serious.
The Sundial series is quietly the best-kept indoor calendar
The 2026 Sundial Ticketed Concert Series wrapped in spring, but RCSC summer programming is running through the "Hot Fun Outta the Sun" event series in the Sundial Auditorium starting Wednesday, May 6, 2026, and events are free for RCSC Members and their guests. A free indoor auditorium program on a July afternoon is the kind of amenity residents in less-planned communities do not get to price into their housing costs.

A four-hour session where you walk in, glaze a piece, and take it home the same day is a low-commitment way for a newer resident to see what the club world here looks like without joining anything. Bring a friend who has been meaning to try it and never has.
What actually opened on Grand Avenue
The one non-RCSC news item that residents keep asking about: yes, the corner near Plaza de Grande finally filled in. KFC opened a new Sun City restaurant on Wednesday, July 8, at 10 a.m., located at 10801 W. Grand Avenue near Plaza de Grande, owned and operated by Pak Foods, LLC, a multi-unit, multi-brand operating group with locations across the Southwest. A ribbon-cutting with the local chamber of commerce followed on Tuesday, July 14, at 10 a.m.
Two things to know past the press release. First, Pak Foods is a Houston-based franchisee group that operates more than 160 restaurants across the Southwest, so this is an experienced operator rather than a first-time franchisee. Second, the Sun City opening marks Pak Foods' 84th KFC location, which is the kind of scale that tends to mean stable staffing and consistent hours. For a Grand Avenue pad that has cycled through a few uses, that matters more than the menu.
A working summer rule for residents: pick one indoor RCSC event a week, one crafts-building visit, and one new food stop you have not tried. That is three planned outings without leaving a five-mile radius, which is enough structure to keep July from disappearing.
The community events happening around the edges
Beyond RCSC, the neighborhood clubs and churches are still running full calendars. The Guns Out classic rock cover band is playing J&T's Copper Penny Tavern on Friday, June 26 at 7:00 p.m., and Caregiver Connect–Aging Well is meeting Thursday, June 11 at 9:00 a.m. at 9745 W Palmeras Dr. These smaller listings do not make the RCSC flyer, but they are worth scanning the Sun City Independent's weekly calendar for. At Sun Bowl concerts, attendees are asked to bring their own lawn chair or blanket, and positively no key fobs are accepted for admission. If you have adult kids visiting in July, sort the card question before the event, not at the door.
